Chapter Eight

Anne stopped by Leah’s office between classes, which Leah always expected. However, she had not expected a surprise visit from her mother, who showed up just as Leah was shutting the door for a moment with Anne. “Hello, dear!” her mother called from several feet away. Leah’s eyes grew wide. “Mom!” she returned, surprised. The woman stepped into the office and took her in her arms, going on about how good it was to see her. Anne started for the door in an attempt escape, but Leah grabbed her by the wrist and mouthed ‘don’t you dare’ with eyes glared. Anne stepped back and watched the elder continue to interact with Leah. She took in the woman’s gray-streaked brown hair that lay in a loose bun, her bejeweled red shirt, and her crow’s feet encased blue eyes. She spoke rapidly, never losing her smile, and eventually looked to the side and noticed Anne. “Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to interrupt your meeting with a student.” Before Leah could answer, Anne returned with “Not to worry, we weren’t really meeting. I can leave so you two can talk.” Leah was quick to counter with “No, you can stay. Mom, this is Anne. She does go here, but she's not my student.” Anne raised her eyebrows in shock. Leah’s mother moved forward and extended her hand. “Anne, such a lovely name. It is very nice to meet you. I’m Ruth, Leah’s mother.” Anne took the woman’s hand, keeping her surprise well hidden. “The pleasure is mine, ma’am.” Ruth smiled and continued, “So you two are friends? I don’t believe I’ve seen or heard of you before.”

Anne grinned, sitting in one of the chairs. “Yes ma’am, we’re very close.” Leah bit her lip to keep from giggling, then added in, “we met through the Science club. Anne here is a genius at anatomy.” It was Anne’s turn to hide her amusement. Ruth nodded in interest and offered “Anatomy, well that’s an interesting subject. You don’t see a lot of women studying that; not as many as men, anyways.”

Anne leaned sideways and rested her chin on her palm. “Oh yes,” she started, face serious, “I study it every night.” Leah pressed her lips together, almost laughing, and then said “She runs a lot of the labs.” Anne nodded. “I’m very good with my hands.” Her ability to stay serious added to the humor. Leah covered her mouth with her fist in an attempt to keep from breaking the front. Ruth considered this for a moment, then moved to sit in the other chair at the desk, Leah sitting across from them in her seat. “Well, I was just coming to talk to Leah about her appointments this weekend. Do you want me to pick you up? Or are you going to drive yourself?” Leah cocked her head, confused. “What appointments?” she asked. Ruth clicked her tongue against her teeth and shook her head in disbelief. “Choosing the wedding dress, picking the venue,
